Location: The location is stunning, set on a nature reserve, yet still within a 10 minutes walk into the center of Sozopol and 3 minutes walk to one of the several close beaches.
Sozopol Bay View is located 35 kms south from the city of Bourgas at the foot of the Strandja mountain range, announced by the Bulgarian government as a nature reserve; the reserve has over a 150 species of birds. The nearest airport –Bourgas is only a 20 minute drive. The area is famous for its peaceful and spectacular scenery, stunning sea views and fresh air.
Lots of tourists visiting Sozopol say it is the one of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria and most of the locals agree.
Sozopol is fast becoming the most up market resort on the Black sea coast. It really is a beautiful old town, with amazing restaurants overhanging the sea, narrow cobbled streets, remains of churches and temples and old houses dating back from the 15th century will take you back in time.
Prices for food and alcohol are extremely cheap compared to some of the bigger resorts and the food is all fresh and is of the best quality. Bulgarian wine is a must and the industry is growing fast. The EU has been investing in the Bulgarian vine yards.
Sozopol is split into the Ancient and New town .The ancient town has a population of about 7,000 people. The town lies on a small peninsula in the farthest southern part of the Bourgas Bay. A one hundred-meter long strip of land connects it to the mainland. From 1925 on, the town has expanded in the direction of the Harmanite Area (the so-called 'new town').
The areas history dates back from the early 5-th Century B.C. Great conquerors and warriors like Alexander the Great, Marcus Lucul., Khan Kroum; Amadeus of Savoy all set foot here and led numerous battles for this picturesque and important for its location place on the Black sea coast. The remains of amphitheaters, churches and fortresses tell us the real history of the town and attract a number of archeologists all over the world.
Only wooden houses have ever been built there; the oldest of these can be still seen in the old quarter of the town. A small fishermen's settlement at the time of the Liberation, Sozopol gradually became the biggest fishing centre of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, which also developed a tourism industry. Sozopol has a small picturesque harbor. The famous Tsar's Beach is located to the north of the town. Raiski Zaliv (Paradise Bay) is nestled among rocks to the south of the town, while further southwards are the Kavatsite beach. The Harmanite Beach is immediately to the south of the so-called 'new town'. An ancient necropolis was found here in 1993 and excavations are still going on.
Surrounding area:
The isle of St. Ivan is situated just 2km away from the old town in northern direction. St. Ivan is the biggest Black Sea isle in Bulgarian territorial waters. Once upon a time, the isle hosted a monastery called the Holy Virgin, which was later renamed into St. Ivan Prodromos.
Some 20km to the south is the Ropotamo River, which is declared a natural reserve. It is particularly famous for its tender water lilies and turtles. A boat trip down the river or a walk along its banks is an unforgettable experience. The nature here is breathtaking for its abundance of floral species, impressive rocky formations (such as the so-called Lion's Head rock standing out on the right-hand bank of the river), small caves, and water plants and animals. Besides its appeal to nature lovers, the area is of particular attraction to hunters as well. Red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, roe deer, wolf, fox and jackal are the main game species. The migratory birds' route of 'Via Pontica' also passes over the territory of Ropotamo, which is connected to the presence of various wild duck and geese and particularly woodcock. The latter is a favorite target of many foreign hunters visiting the region during the autumn or winter.
The Duni Resort is situated 7 kms south of Sozopol and was completed in 1987 as a Bulgarian-Austrian project. It offers lots of hotels, villas and bungalows. One of the most luxurious resorts on the Bulgarian Black sea coast.
The Alepou Beach and Arkoutino Beach just 15 kms south to Sozopol are wild and beautiful places where the sea is traditionally rough.
Two natural reserves cover this area - Vodna Lilia (water lily) and Velyov Vir. Via Pontica - the way of migrating birds flying to the south passes through here. Every year at the end of the summer thousands of storks, pelicans, and about 30 species of birds of prey gather in the area before they head southwards to spend the winter.
